4th July Games

Trash to Treasure Croquet

Add an easy, yet unexpected, event to your celebration by playing Trash to Treasure Croquet.

You'll need croquet mallets and balls, but skip the standard wire wickets.

Instead, look for household items and recyclables that a croquet ball could pass under or through, such as an oatmeal container with the top and bottom removed, a cereal box with a hole cut on each side to make a tunnel, a child's plastic chair, or a laundry detergent bottle with an arch cut from the bottom.

Set up a course that circles the yard (so you don't whack any party guests) and uses at least a dozen creative wickets, including one brave parent with his or her feet spread wide.

Red, White, and Blue Tag

Two kids are designated to be "It."

Everyone else holds a colored chip in their closed fists (red, white, or blue).

The "Its" chase the others and try to tag them.

When tagged, they have to give the person that's "It" their chip, then go to a designated person for a new chip.

The first "It" to have collected 1 red, 1 white, and 1 blue chip yells "STOP!"

Tips & Party Tricks

If you ate a big meal and you're feeling full as you go to sleep, lay on your left side.  That'll will keep you from suffering from acid reflux.  It also keeps your stomach lower than your esophagus, which will help keep stomach acid from sliding up your throat. :):)

4th July Poem

Poem: A Patriotic Wish

By: Edgar Guest

I'd like to be the sort of man the flag could

boast about;

I'd like to be the sort of man it cannot live

without;

I'd like to be the type of man

That really is American:

The head-erect and shoulders-square,

Clean-minded fellow, just and fair,

That all men picture when they see

The glorious banner of the free.

I'd like to be the sort of man the flag now

typifies,

The kind of man we really want the flag to

symbolize;

The loyal brother to a trust,

The big, unselfish soul and just,

The friend of every man oppressed,

The strong support of all that's best,

The sturdy chap the banner's meant,

Where'er it flies, to represent.

I'd like to be the sort of man the flag's supposed

to mean,

The man that all in fancy see wherever it is

seen,

The chap that's ready for a fight

Whenever there's a wrong to right,

The friend in every time of need,

The doer of the daring deed,

The clean and generous handed man

That is a real American.
